I have recently just finished an ecommerce website using Magento and wondered if a similar site could have been done in MODX with a shopping cart plugin. So I have been looking for free plugins for MODX to add a shopping cart with product/shop backend configuration.
I found VisionCart, although still in development (currently on release candidate 1), to meet all my requriements. So I installed it onto my test server running MODX (2.0.7) and had a little play around with its features.
Some of the features are:
- Full control over categories / products
- Custom product attributes
- Extensive snippets to handle all your custom needs
- Extensive shop configuration
- Custom shipping / payment modules (PayPal)
- Order confirmation
- Very customisable
- Tier pricing
- Javascript fly to basket
- Product CSV import (still in development)
Some of the planned features for future releases can be found in the dedicated forums, in this topic: 'Stuff planned for the future'
I found setting up a shop, adding categories and products to be a simple proccess (see video below). I think the use of VisionCart is great for smaller web shops, but for bigger sites, it needs more development to compete with all the functionality that competators such as Magento have.
